MYTHS ABOUT PRS & PPL
BLANKET LICENSE & MUSIC PROHIBITION LAWS
Question 1
Having bought a Blanket License from PRS & PPL,
shops can legally play anyone's
music!
TRUE or FALSE?
Answer: FALSE! Shops
cannot play anyone's music, certainly not copyright
music outside PRS & PPL control.
PRS & PPL Blanket Licenses only permit shops to play copyright music within
PRS & PPL
control.
Shops
playing copyright music (without permission) outside
PRS & PPL control are breaking the same music
prohibition law
used by
PRS & PPL to enforce music performance prohibition. As neither
PRS & PPL provide Lists of their Members
it is
difficult (if not impossible) for a shop to know if they breaking a music
prohibition law!
MYTHS ABOUT PRS & PPL FAIR
DISTRIBUTION OF BLANKET LICENSE FEES
Question 2
Income from PRS & PPL Blanket License
fees is distributed fairly to members whose CDs are heard in shops!
TRUE or FALSE?
Answer: FALSE! On the
contrary. most PRS & PPL members whose CDs are heard in shops receive a
pittance or nothing at all.
Shop Blanket Licensees do not need to keep registers of the CDs
played which proves fair distribution of income impossible.
PRS & PPL websites are far from transparent on distribution
of Blanket License fees - no statistical information is provided
as to
which artist or musician receive the most income, nor any figures as to region
of income. The system is open to abuse.
